Wand Making Ideas

Last week, a group of us Demo Gals got together to create! This week I am going to share with you some of the wonderful ideas for creating wands. And a BIG THANK YOU to Joanne Swiss for sharing her ideas too!!

You can make wands from a VARIETY of different materials… Paper, Wire, Wood, Clay, HOT GLUE, and so much more!!! And a great way to get creative is to use items you already have laying around the house or use recycled or Found Items!

Check out some of these great ideas!!

In the world of Wand Making, there really aren’t any “Rules” to speak of except that it should be long and skinny and be somewhat tapered (though not required). That’s pretty much it. Aside from that, you can create your wand for any magical or fun reason, out of whatever you want, and it can be as little or as large as you’d like!!!

Wands can be made out of Skewers, chopsticks, driftwood, or sticks!!

To make a wand:

  • Start with your base (stick, pencil, chop stick, thick wire, etc)

  • Use hot glue to adhere your Focal Point (this can be a large orb, gem, skeleton, piece of old jewelry, stone, doo-da or gadget). I recommend holding this for about 30 seconds to a minute for the hot glue to dry.

  • Use hot glue to drip a large amount of hot glue on the base of the item and the end of the skewer (or whatever your wand base is) end. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN YOURSELF as you leave the hot glue gun end at the tip but allow the glue to drip down the wand base. Slowly twirl the wand on the table as you move the hot glue down the wand base allowing the hot glue to drip and coat the entire wand base (or as much as you desire). The drippy-effect, when dry, looks very magical.

  • At this point, you can adhere other items that you want to be in your wand base, such as a string of small beads, or wire, or little findings. Maybe you want nothing else, just the hot glue. Maybe you don’t like the drippy effect, in which case you can just use the hot glue to adhere little findings

  • Once you are satisfied with how your wand handle looks, paint the entire wand (with or without the exception of your Focal Point. If you have an amazing gem, don’t paint it!! If you pieced together a focal point and there is a lot of glue showing, go ahead and paint it. ) You will need to paint your wand with BLACK or WHITE Acrylic Paint. *Hint, if you thin-down your paints by adding a little bit of water to your paint it will go on much faster and dry faster allowing you to paint a second coat right away.

  • Once you have painted your wand, go back with a little bit of gold paint, or silver, or copper, or platinum and add in highlights. You can also add in fun colors like Lavender, Red, Green, Purple, or Blues… there are SO MANY CHOICES!!

  • Allow your want to dry. During this time you can sprinkle on glitters or pearl-ex powders being careful not to smear around any wet paint!!

Check out some of the gals creations from Last Wednesday!!!

Here we have Lil and Llew.. Llew made a wand for Lil this time!! So sweet!!

You can make a wand using Findings from around the house, broken items, recycled items and more!!!

Here, Joanne found some cool old grey computer buttons (like from a washed up gadget on the beach!! ) she cleaned them up and just glued them onto the top of her large Chinese Wok Chopsticks that she had painted black. She added in some fun gold beads and suddenly a Wand comes to life!! Love this neat idea!!!

I love this idea Mary had using Potpourri!! A totally natural looking wand!! Great focal point!! LOVE the colors!!

Check out this idea.. Joanne used one of those decorative flower lights as her Wand Focal Point! She painted her wand base white and added beads and other findings to create a magical piece!!

Look at all these other Wands people created!! LOTS of great ideas!!!

Check out this idea using PAPER!!

  • Start with a Large-Guage Wire base and curve both ends of the wire so no one gets stabbed!!!

  • Take brown-bag paper and tear it into a large rectangle-shape.. twist the paper so it looks kind of like a vine!!

  • Use hot glue to hold the large end of the paper bag at the end and then wrap the “vine” around the wire and use hot glue to adhere the paper to the wire.

  • When you get to the curved tip, adhere the paper but go OVER the curved tip by about an inch or so. Apply a little more hot glue so you get a nice bit of adhesive and (don’t burn yourself!!) squeeze the tip of the paper into a point for the wand.

Now you have created a cool wood-looking paper wand that looks like a piece of wood but it is BENDABLE!!!! SO it can be a creepy wand or a fun, Elder-style wand!! Paint it black or add glitter!!

Use hot glue to adhere some lines of hot glue to the wand and then roll in your favorite glitter!! (I used Star-Shaped Glitter, OF COURSE!!)

There are a variety of ways to make easy paper wands that are magical and fit whatever Magical Theme you need!!

Here are some other wand ideas….

Use Embroidery Floss to wrap a stick or piece of drift wood. I sewed little beads and sequins into mine (the embellishment matched the color of thread for each section!

Use Disposable items like… ORANGES!

Take an orange peel and peel it, wrap it into a rose-shape and/or leaf shapes. Let it dry-out overnight. Use hot glue to adhere it to a skewer. add acrylic paint if needed

These were made by a friend.. what a wonderful creation!!

This is a wand I created using a blue marble as a Focal Point. I re-glued the skeleton so it was glancing at the crystal ball. I used wire and hot glue to create the unique texture.

Check out this creation from Joanne Swiss.. I love the transformation of the items after the Black Acrylic Paint… All ready for Halloween!!

We took a group photo of the group with our wands!!

THANK YOU to each of the ladies who came out to meet last week. It was a pleasure to create together and to see inspiration flowing!!! I loved seeing each of your unique creations!!
